Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi officially opened the newly constructed Islamabad Model Jail in H-16, by consuming a meal of daal at the facility. State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry accompanied him during the meal. The inauguration occurred amidst protests from journalists who had been led to expect Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to perform the inauguration ceremony.
Naqvi praised the work of Chaudhry, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman, and his team for completing the project. The jail project had faced delays, with construction beginning in 2016 after its launch in 2009. By 2024, only 40-50% of the project was completed, and it was later handed over to the CDA, which finished the first phase at a cost of approximately Rs7 billion.
The remaining prisoners from Islamabad's Adiala Jail would be relocated to the new facility, with the second phase completion pending.
