After years of rumors, Apple has finally unveiled its OLED MacBook Pro, featuring a more vibrant and brighter display with touch support. The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, officially named MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, are essentially standard MacBook Pros with an improved screen. Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer, stated that this is a significant leap forward for the Mac.
The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is powered by either the M5 Pro or M5 Max processors, with the former starting at 24GB RAM and the latter 36GB RAM. This new MacBook Pro showcases Apple's deep integration of silicon, hardware, and software, setting it apart from any other device. The PROLED XDR display is a tandem OLED screen, offering several benefits beyond touch sensitivity. Its self-illuminating pixels result in a thinner, lighter display with superior contrast compared to traditional backlit screens.
Despite the thinner bezels, the 16-inch model remains at 16.3 inches, while the 14-inch is now 14.2 inches. The resolution is slightly higher than non-OLED models, at 3,024 by 1,986 or 3,472 by 2,266 pixels. The new display boasts a brightness of 1,200 nits for full-screen content and 2,000 nits for HDR content, along with a 120Hz variable refresh rate and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The now-familiar notch has been replaced with a smaller Dynamic Island.
The MacBook Pro's touch support is a significant addition, allowing users to interact with macOS and software directly on the screen, eliminating the need for a trackpad or mouse. This multitouch-enabled screen also supports gestures. The interface has been updated to better accommodate touch inputs, and the new MacBook Pro features six speakers with an all-new woofer design, Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, and dedicated audio tuning when the lid is closed.
The device can be charged up to 50% in just 30 minutes and offers storage capacity of up to 16TB. The MacBook Pro's design remains unchanged, with the same physical dimensions as the previous non-OLED version. Pre-orders are now available, with shipping set for November 6.
