On October 28, K-water announced it had signed a new agreement with Microsoft to enhance their strategic collaboration. The partnership builds upon their earlier joint venture to construct an artificial wetland upstream of Soyanggang Dam.
The new agreement focuses on two initiatives targeting the greater Seoul area and the Busan region. These projects aim to address water scarcity concerns resulting from the growth of advanced industries and to forge a connection between private-sector ESG investment and public water management.
One of the projects will be implemented in the greater Seoul region. It involves deploying AI-based analysis, IoT monitoring, and advanced leak detection technology to prevent water loss along the supply pipeline network. By employing these technologies, the partners anticipate a reduction in water loss, thereby alleviating water stress in the Han River basin and ensuring practical water availability.
The anticipated water restoration effect from this project is estimated at 5.9 million cubic meters over a decade. This volume is roughly equivalent to the yearly water consumption of approximately 53,000 individuals in South Korea. The project's outcomes will undergo independent calculation and verification following internationally recognized methodologies.
In addition, the partnership will execute a water quality improvement project in Busan Eco Delta City. This initiative will entail constructing an integrated water treatment facility to purify polluted stream water from Pyeonggangcheon Stream. The purified water will be utilized as maintenance water for the city's lake park and navigational canal. The project aims to generate water restoration of about 1.9 million cubic meters while simultaneously enhancing ecosystem health across the Nakdong River basin.
Beyond addressing water quality, the project will also enhance public spaces for local residents. Using the purified water, the partners plan to create inviting resting areas and facilitate educational programs targeting children and students. The objective is to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable water management practices. K-water's president, Yoon Seog-dae, highlighted the agreement as evidence of the corporation's recognized leadership in the global water restoration market.
