Judge Presiding Over Nicolas Maduro Case Dies; Hispanic Female Judge to Replace Him

On June 14, 2027, a new judge will preside over the trial of Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The previous presiding judge, Alvin K. Hellerstein, passed away just days before his 93rd birthday. U.S. federal judge Analisa Nadine Torres, who is of Hispanic origin, will take over the case. Hellerstein, who was appointed to preside over the trial by President Bill Clinton in 1998, had a noteworthy career, handling high-profile cases such as the September 11 attacks, Harvey Weinstein's sexual harassment case, and Michael Cohen's representation of former President Donald Trump.

Born in New York in 1933, Hellerstein studied law at Columbia University and served in the United States Army before becoming a lawyer in private practice. He gained a reputation for issuing well-founded rulings, deep understanding of the law, and approach to administering justice. Torres, a veteran federal judge, has been serving on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York since 2013.

Prior to this, she had experience as a judge on the New York City Criminal Court, Civil Court, and New York State Supreme Court. Despite being nominated by Democratic presidents, Torres does not represent any political party, as federal judges do not formally align with political affiliations.
