Russian President Vladimir Putin called SpaceX CEO Elon Musk a "real genius" on Wednesday during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow. The remarks came after a discussion about satellite technology, with Putin emphasizing that Russia and its American partners, including Musk, are in close contact. Putin's comments came as the US and Russia appear to be growing closer, even as Russia faces a five-year anniversary of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Rassvet, Russia's satellite internet project, currently has only a few dozen satellites in orbit, while Musk's Starlink has launched around 13,000. Putin noted the importance of maintaining communication between Rassvet and Starlink satellites to avoid interference in orbit. The Russian Embassy in South Africa described Rassvet as "Russia's Starlink alternative" and "marking only the country's first steps in this field."
