Barcelona fined €602 over Álvarez approach

The Spanish Football Federation has imposed a €602 fine on Barcelona following a complaint from Atlético Madrid regarding the Catalan club's handling of negotiations for striker Julián Álvarez. The sanction, classified as a minor infringement, was confirmed on Tuesday and comes under Article 133 of the RFEF’s disciplinary regulations for non-compliance with orders, instructions, agreements or regulatory obligations.

Atlético alleged that Barcelona approached the 26-year-old Argentine international without properly notifying Atlético of the interest, a requirement under Spanish rules. Barcelona insists they informed Atlético and acted appropriately throughout the process. Álvarez, who remains under contract with Atlético until June 2030, was a target during the summer transfer window, with his interest in Barcelona reportedly rising after he expressed a desire to play for the Blaugrana.

Meanwhile, Álvarez has worked to mend relations with Atlético supporters, apologising for his comments about wanting to leave the club. The fine, described as symbolic, mirrors a 2019 case involving a €300 fine for a similar situation with Antoine Griezmann. Barcelona plans to appeal the decision.
