All inmates safely returned after attack on escort vehicle — Official

On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, an attack took place on a convoy of vehicles carrying Nigerian inmates to court in Rivers State. The convoy, traveling along Aba Road in the Oil Mill Market area, was ambushed, leading to the safe return of all inmates to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Port Harcourt, according to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

Chief Superintendent of Corrections, J.N. Osuji, stated that the armed escort team had fired warning shots to deter the attackers. NCoS expressed sympathy for the victim's family and condemned the attack, emphasizing the danger it posed to public safety and the lawful duties of the service. The service urged the public to remain calm and allow authorities to investigate the incident, promising to cooperate fully with the investigation.
