A cowboy hat for Aznar, a brick from a prison for Zapatero and a bullet pen for Rajoy: the surprising gifts for the presidents
See the complete official list of gifts to the three former heads of Government after Judge Calama asked the National Heritage for those received by the socialist leader
Former Spanish Prime Ministers José María Aznar and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero received gifts from Libyan leader Muamar El Gadafi, including a horse and a saddle. Zapatero's gifts are now at the centre of controversy, with a judge requesting a complete inventory after finding jewellery in a safe during an investigation into the Plus Ultra case.
Zapatero attributes the jewellery to a personal gift from Saudi monarch Abdalá Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, but the official register of gifts received by 21st-century former presidents does not record it. The register does show a range of luxury items and unusual gifts.
