Teen charged over Sydney house fire with 88yo woman inside

A 17-year-old boy has been charged in connection with a house fire in Sydney's inner west, which left four people hospitalised, including an 88-year-old woman. About 40 firefighters and 10 trucks responded to the blaze at a home in Abbotsford around 4am on Tuesday. The elderly woman, her son, and his wife were rescued and taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

A 49-year-old man, who climbed a ladder to rescue the elderly woman, also received treatment for his injuries and was taken to the hospital. Another man, who was a long-term renter at the property, was treated but did not require hospitalisation. The teenager was arrested around 11pm on Tuesday at a home in Merrylands and treated for burns to his hands and legs before being taken to the hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Police conducted a search warrant at the Abbotsford home and seized several items of interest. The teenager faces charges of damaging property by fire or explosion, valued at over $15,000, as well as being carried in a conveyance without the owner's consent and obtaining property by deception. He was refused bail and is set to appear before Parramatta Bail Division Court on Wednesday.
