A special counsel team led by Lee Tae-han searched the Olympic Park Handball Gymnasium in southeastern Seoul on Tuesday. The team executed a search-and-seizure warrant at the arena, which served as a vote counting center during the June 3 local elections, to secure election records and surveillance camera footage. This marks the first search and seizure conducted by the team since the investigation began last month.
The probe is investigating an unprecedented shortage of ballots during the local elections, which resulted in multiple polling stations reporting shortages and some voters being unable to cast their votes. The team plans to review the secured materials to investigate the circumstances of the shortage and allegations of poor election management by the National Election Commission.
The search occurred one day before the special counsel team is scheduled to inspect voter ballots stored at the gymnasium. According to Yonhap News, the site houses 2.47 million ballot papers cast in Seoul's southeastern Songpa Ward, where protesters have blocked the removal of the ballots amid calls for a rerun of the elections and accountability.
