In Germany's auto insurance market, a three-year period of sharp price increases has come to an end. On average, new car policies cost around two percent more than last year, according to Verivox, an insurance comparison portal. This moderate increase aligns with the general inflation rate. In the lower price segment, prices have even dropped slightly, by nearly two percent on average.
However, significant price differences persist throughout the year, particularly in November and December, when millions of German drivers shop for cheaper auto insurance policies.
In the middle price segment, auto liability insurance premiums have risen by 3.1 percent this year, while more affordable insurers have seen a 1.2 percent drop in prices compared to a year ago. Telematics insurance has become 0.4 percent more expensive in the middle price segment, but cheaper by one percent in the lower price segment.
For comprehensive policies, which cover damages caused by the insured's own vehicle, the trend is more pronounced: a 1.6 percent increase in the middle price segment and a 2.3 percent decrease in the lower price segment.
Despite these price movements, Verivox's CEO Aljoscha Ziller cautioned that a lasting price shift remains unlikely. "Replacement parts and repairs continue to rise in cost and remain a cost driver," he explained. Verivox calculates its index in collaboration with statistician Wolfgang Bischof from the Technical University of Munich. These figures specifically refer to the initiation of new policies, not the increasingly costly renewal contracts.
