Orioles introduce new GM Jared Banner, who takes over player development

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have introduced their new general manager, Jared Banner, who will take charge of player development. Banner, who is an assistant GM with the Chicago Cubs, expressed his awareness of the challenges he faces, acknowledging the frustrations of fans and the team's recent struggles. The Orioles, who won the AL East in 2023 and were a wild-card team the following year, have had two consecutive sub-.500 seasons, leading to increased pressure on previous GM Mike Elias, who now serves as team president.

Banner will oversee player development, performance, health care, and coaches, while Elias will focus on scouting and acquisitions. The team is facing skepticism and potential future uncertainties, including a possible lockout. Despite these challenges, Banner is eager to work with the franchise legends, including Cal Ripken Jr. and Jim Palmer, and has already reached out to them.
