NUH to stop offering plastic bags at pharmacies from November

The hospital strongly encourages those visiting its pharmacies to bring their own reusable bags.

From November, National University Hospital's (NUH) pharmacies will no longer routinely provide plastic bags to patients and the public collecting medication, as part of the public hospital's sustainability efforts. NUH announced the change on Oct 26 via a Facebook post, encouraging visitors to bring their own reusable bags when collecting medication.

For those without reusable bags, donated bags will be available on racks near the pharmacies in the main building, medical centre, and Kent Ridge wing, depending on availability. The hospital also mentioned that individuals in need of a bag can purchase a reusable one at Health & U, NUH's in-house retail pharmacy. NUH has already reduced its plastic usage by over 50%, having phased out small plastic bags from its pharmacies and discontinued providing plastic bags for staff bins, saving approximately 200,000 plastic bags per year.

The hospital expressed gratitude for the public's support in making a difference towards a more sustainable future. ST has reached out to NUH, National Health University System, NHG Health, and SingHealth for further details on their respective plastic bag policies at hospital pharmacies.
