The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining by seizing 22 Chanfang machines in a recent operation in Eshaem, Nzema East Municipality, Western Region. This marks a significant shift in NAIMOS' strategy, which now targets not only the miners themselves but also companies and individuals involved in the manufacturing, transportation, storage, and supply of equipment used for illegal mining.
During the operation, NAIMOS personnel dismantled 28 Chanfang machines, 19 water pumps, and five makeshift structures used to support illegal mining. The team discovered evidence of recent excavator activity and recovered a monitor from one of the seized machines. Additionally, 22 brand-new Chanfang machines were found on a Hyundai truck, which was immediately seized, along with a store containing a substantial quantity of equipment and spare parts associated with illegal mining operations.
This move is part of NAIMOS' broader Operation WATER SHIELD, aimed at protecting the Ankobra River from the devastating impact of illegal mining activities. Going forward, NAIMOS will intensify efforts to dismantle the entire supply and logistics network that sustains illegal mining, including targeting chanfang fabricators, equipment manufacturers, dealers, transporters, warehouses, and individuals who rent machinery for such activities.
