Discord public server messages may be soon searchable on Google, but you can opt out
The platform's Discoverable Servers are about to get a lot more discoverable.
Discord is set to make its public servers more discoverable by introducing Server Web Pages on November 16. These pages will feature basic information about the server, such as its description and summaries of ongoing discussions on public channels. Starting mid-December, users may see individual messages from these channels appear in search engine results, word-for-word, alongside the Server Web Pages.
Notably, the usernames or avatars of the poster will not be displayed. Discord's primary motivation behind this change is to enhance the visibility of community information in web searches, akin to finding a Reddit thread among search results. However, this update is only applicable to Discoverable Servers - large communities of 1,000 or more members that do not require an invitation to join.
Unlike private servers, DMs, and Group DMs, Discoverable Servers will remain private. Admins can opt-out of channels being included in the web presence starting now, while users can also prevent their posts from being indexed through Discord's Data and Privacy settings. In select markets, including the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, channel messages will be off by default to comply with local regulations. Teen users are not eligible to opt-in to the feature until they reach adulthood.
