Did you know JPJ has its own marching band?
Mega Symphony started with borrowed instruments and reluctant recruits; today, the ensemble is marching to its own beat.
The Malaysian road transport department, known as JPJ, is famous for its duties in issuing licenses, inspecting vehicles, and enforcing traffic rules. However, many Malaysians are unaware of another unique aspect of JPJ: its own marching band, called Mega Symphony.
Mega Symphony was established in 2017 at the Malaysia Road Transport Academy in Ayer Molek, Melaka. The band's inception was born out of necessity, as a training graduation ceremony in 2016 saw an outside band hired for the march-past. Former transport ministry secretary-general Saripuddin Kasim then decided that JPJ should have its own marching band for the next graduation ceremony.
Despite the initial challenge of recruiting volunteers, JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan managed to gather 35 candidates from JPJ branches across the country, including Sabah and Sarawak. However, only three of them had prior experience playing marching-band instruments. By the end of the recruitment process, 35 candidates were identified, with only three having any musical experience.
To transform this mixed group into a fully functioning marching ensemble, specially appointed instructors trained the recruits intensively for three months. By May 2017, Mega Symphony was ready to make its first public appearance at a JPJ training graduation ceremony. Since then, the band has developed its own unique style, favoring popular tunes that are easily recognized by the audience, rather than sticking solely to formal marching repertoire.
Mega Symphony's members are not full-time musicians but JPJ officers and staff who perform alongside their regular duties. This unique arrangement allows them to balance their work responsibilities with intensive rehearsals for major performances and competitions. The band currently has 36 permanent members, including 11 women, as well as 10 reserves who step in when needed.
Despite the logistical constraints of rehearsing with members stationed throughout Malaysia, the band's enthusiastic members have managed to absorb and understand their roles in just a short training period. As a result, Mega Symphony has become an integral part of JPJ's public identity, performing at various events alongside bands from other agencies, including the armed forces, police, and prisons department.
