Cheaper DStv: 4 new packages take effect November 5
Canal+ and MultiChoice Ghana have introduced cheaper DStv subscription packages as part of efforts to make pay television more affordable and discourage the use of pirated services and illegal digital boxes.
DStv, the popular satellite television service, has implemented four new subscription packages to make pay television more accessible and reduce the prevalence of pirated services. The existing six packages will be replaced with four: Starter, Select, Sports, and Ultimate. The Starter package will cost GH¢50 per month, the Select package GH¢100, the Sports package GH¢250, and the Ultimate package GH¢570.
The new packages were introduced after discussions with the Ghanaian government, specifically the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations. The goal is to lower the cost barrier for legal television content, ahead of an anticipated crackdown on piracy, while also expanding subscribers' access to entertainment, news, movies, and sports at reduced prices.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on October 26, 2026, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, emphasized the government's commitment to protecting Ghanaian consumers. He stated that the aim was to provide television content at affordable prices for Ghanaian families. The government is awaiting the Attorney-General’s Department’s opinion before launching a major crackdown on illegal television streaming and ghost boxes.
MultiChoice Ghana’s Country Chief Executive Officer, Alex Okyere, explained that the new structure simplifies DStv's offerings from six to four packages while increasing the content available to subscribers. The Starter package, priced at GH¢50, will offer 90 channels, including entertainment, movie, children's, and free-to-air channels, as well as all La Liga matches.
The Select package at GH¢100 will provide 123 channels. The Sports package at GH¢250 will cover the company's entire football offering, including major leagues like the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, compared to the current requirement of GH¢563 for full football access. The Ultimate package, which replaces the previous GH¢854 Premium package, will cost GH¢570 and include additional premium sports such as Formula One, golf, tennis, MotoGP, and rugby.
For Canal+, Executive Vice-President of Public Affairs, Dr Keabetswe Modimoeng, the agreement represents a successful collaboration between the company and the government. He highlighted that combating piracy is essential to protect the creative industry and the livelihoods of those involved in content production, including producers, actors, costume designers, and make-up artists.
Dr Modimoeng emphasized that safeguarding content is crucial for sustaining a stable macroeconomic environment and currency in the country, which facilitates the production and cost modeling necessary for sustainable pricing.
