Ballon d’Or 2026: Harry Kane beats Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe to award

Barcelona's young sensation Lamine Yamal has etched his name into football history by clinching the 2026 Kopa Trophy for an unprecedented third consecutive year. The 19-year-old Spanish forward was honored at the prestigious 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday, October 26, following a remarkable season that saw Barcelona triumph in La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, and Spain's triumphant World Cup campaign.

This latest victory marks Yamal's dominance over the award, which celebrates the world's best young football talent under the age of 21. His previous wins were achieved in 2024 and 2025, surpassing the achievements of past winners like Kylian Mbappé, Matthijs de Ligt, Pedri, Gavi, and Jude Bellingham, who have each claimed the title once.

Yamal outshone a field of exceptional talents, including Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsí, Yan Diomande, Lennart Karl, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Johan Manzambi. Despite his personal triumph, Yamal expressed a desire for Cubarsí to have received the award, acknowledging the defender's outstanding performances. Yamal's third Kopa Trophy victory also bolsters Barcelona's impressive streak in the award's history, having previously seen Pedri and Gavi win in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

The 2020 edition was not awarded, while the inaugural prize went to Mbappé in 2018, de Ligt in 2019, and Bellingham in 2023. At 19, Yamal is still eligible for the award in future editions, giving him the opportunity to extend his record and further solidify his status as one of the leading young talents in the sport, awaiting to see if he can translate his growing list of individual accolades into even greater success with Barcelona and Spain.
