An 11-person startup raised $40 million to challenge robotics' data-hungry giants

Machenta, founded by Imperial College London researchers, raised $40 million to build AI that teaches robots new tasks from one demonstration.

Machenta, an 11-person startup led by Edward Johns and Vitalis Vosylius Oscar May Machenta, has secured $40 million in seed funding to challenge data-hungry giants in the robotics industry, according to Business Insider. The funding round was led by venture capital firms Creandum and Union Square Ventures.

Machenta's unique approach involves training an AI model that can teach robots new physical tasks after witnessing them just once. Unlike rivals who are collecting vast amounts of real-world data, Machenta trains its model in computer-generated environments that mimic object movement and interaction, without utilizing any real-world data.

CEO John and Imperial College professor explained that once the model is trained, it can guide a robot to execute a new task, such as organizing a table or placing objects into a box, after observing it just once. In a demonstration video, three robots successfully packed and closed a box on an assembly line, despite learning the task after a single demonstration.

Machenta currently has 11 employees and is primarily focused on research, with no immediate plans for commercialization. The startup faces competition from larger players with multimillion-dollar valuations, including California-based companies Physical Intelligence ($11 billion), FieldAI ($10 billion) and Skild AI ($14 billion), which already offers technology with similar capabilities.
