The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has begun constructing a six-lane, concrete dual carriageway to replace the current primary access route, in a project aimed at alleviating heavy traffic and improving logistics efficiency. The government-backed Big Push Road Projects initiative is funding the extensive infrastructure work, which is set to enhance the industrial area's transportation capacity.
The TOR, under the management of Edmond Kombat, planned the upgrade following Ministry of Roads and Highways directives. Local firms Joshob Construction Limited and Lemef Construction Limited have taken on the construction task, following a detailed design phase. The refinery's frontage is also being refreshed, with plans to include a water fountain and a new pathway.
The new six-lane concrete road will replace the existing route between the Tema Steel Works Junction and the refinery's entrance, significantly reducing the chronic traffic bottlenecks faced by around 1,000 daily fuel tanker deliveries. Once completed, the upgrade will support TOR's ambitious expansion plans, which include increasing the refinery's crude processing capacity from 45,000 barrels to 100,000 barrels per day.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has put in place traffic diversion points to ensure minimal disruption to local businesses during the construction period.
