Samsung SDI's unit to supply ESS solutions to U.S. firm

Samsung SDI, the South Korean battery manufacturer, has announced a significant deal with Alpha Omega Power, a U.S. utility-scale battery storage developer. The agreement, worth one gigawatt-hour, will see Samsung SDI America supplying energy storage systems (ESS) to Alpha Omega Power. This brings their combined agreements to 1.5 gigawatt-hours, with an earlier contract signed last year.

Alpha Omega Power intends to implement these systems in large-scale power projects, aiming to enhance grid reliability and meet growing electricity demand. Construction is set to commence in markets covered by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council and Electric Reliability Council of Texas next year. The latest agreement sees Samsung SDI supplying its Samsung Battery Box 1.7, an integrated ESS featuring nickel-cobalt-aluminum batteries.

All components, including cells and modules, will be produced at the StarPlus Energy plant in Kokomo, Indiana, with deliveries expected to be finalized by year-end. The Samsung Battery Box 1.7 boasts a 17% higher energy density compared to its predecessor, the Samsung Battery Box 1.
