Roman eXtreme Deep Field (RXDF): What it is and What it Will Do. Speaker: Haojing Yan The post Galaxies SIG Seminar, 3 Nov 2026 appeared first on NASA Science .
On 3rd November 2026, the Cosmic Origins Community will host the Galaxies Science Interest Group seminar. The event will be held virtually, with the link to join available on the provided Zoom link. The seminar will focus on the Roman eXtreme Deep Field (RXDF) program, led by speaker Haojing Yan.
The RXDF program has been allocated 386.41 hours of observing time for Cycle 1-2 of the Roman Space Telescope. This deep imaging project aims to capture an area close to the North Ecliptic Pole, encompassing an impressive 687 arcmin2 within a total footprint of 1243 arcmin2. The RXDF is expected to be minimally impacted by cosmic variance, making it an ideal candidate for studying rare objects that require large volumes for statistical analysis, such as galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at redshifts of 10.
The RXDF will provide unprecedented insights into galaxies and accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) from the early universe (the "cosmic dawn") to its mature stage (the "afternoon"). Moreover, the program will take advantage of Roman's full potential in time-domain science by dividing the observations into three major epochs, each further subdivided into three sub-epochs separated by approximately 10-12 days.
A key aspect of the RXDF time-domain science is the study of supernovae (SNe) at redshifts of 2.5, including first-star SNe. In addition to its primary science goals, the RXDF will also enable the examination of various other topics, such as Galactic brown dwarfs and moving objects within our Solar System.
