Chris Brown gets suspended jail term over London nightclub attack

American singer Chris Brown has been sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for a year, for an attack on music producer Abe Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023. The assault occurred in the VIP area of Tape nightclub in the early hours of February 19, 2023. Brown, 37, pleaded guilty to affray in July and was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday. His co-defendant, 40-year-old Omololu Akinlolu, a vocal coach, received a four-month suspended sentence for his role in the incident.

Judge Tony Baumgartner described Brown as playing a "leading role in this joint offending" and noted that he used a bottle as a weapon. The judge emphasized the dangerous nature of the repeated use of a glass bottle, which carried the risk of causing significantly more serious injury than sustained. The incident, although short-lived, was described as "intense" but unplanned.

Diaw required hospital treatment following the attack and suffered a head injury, muscular-skeletal problems, tenderness around the cervical spine, reduced movement in his left knee, and abdominal issues. Brown's pre-sentence report assessed his risk of further offending as low, but the judge noted that he had two previous convictions involving violence from 2009 and 2013.

The judge emphasized that Brown's pre-existing criminal history made his offending more serious than Akinlolu's, who only joined the violence after it had begun. Both defendants had pleaded guilty to affray, with assault and attempted grievous bodily harm charges against Akinlolu being dropped. Brown's defense lawyer described the incident as "ugly and unattractive," offering a profound apology to those present.
