AI revolution testing ethical standards in accountancy

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into financial analysis and decision-making processes is prompting the accounting profession to grapple with emerging ethical dilemmas. In response to this challenge, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) published its "Navigating Ethics for Trust" report, which surveyed 1,178 finance and accounting professionals across 135 countries.

The findings reveal that 61% of respondents identified AI usage as their top ethical challenge, a significant increase from 32% in the 2024 survey. Other ethical concerns cited by professionals include maintaining ethical leadership (43%) and fostering a strong ethical culture (39%).

The report highlights a changing set of ethical pressures, with technology becoming more prominent alongside longstanding concerns about leadership, organizational culture, and misconduct. Despite the reported benefits of AI, such as improved quality and efficiency of work and better understanding of the technology, professionals face significant challenges in applying ethical principles when using AI tools.

Half of the respondents reported that ethical dilemmas have become harder to resolve, and 53% witnessed unethical behavior over the past three years. Furthermore, 22% of professionals felt pressured to act against their ethical standards.

ACCA's research points to the need for practical support and guidance to help professionals navigate the complexities of ethical dilemmas in an increasingly complex working environment. The organization's toolkit provides a 10-step process for addressing ethical dilemmas, incorporating established ethical principles and offering practical tools for applying them.

Despite the benefits of AI adoption, the survey also highlights risks associated with over-reliance on automated outputs, inadequate checks, information security concerns, and limited transparency. These risks underscore the importance of maintaining robust organizational governance and ensuring accountability in the use of AI-generated outputs.
