President Zelenskyy asserts that Ukraine has liberated more territory than Russia has captured since autumn, a stark contrast to the traditional narrative of a slow Russian advance. Glen Grant, a former British Army officer and former adviser to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, discusses the latest developments in Operation Vivaldi near Lyman.
This operation incorporated drones, ground robots, electronic warfare, and armored vehicles. Grant explains that the shifting initiative on the battlefield is due to the new command ethos allowing junior commanders to act independently, which has led to positive results in Operation Vivaldi. The operation pushed Russian forces back, and there is potential for similar successes in other areas, but it remains to be seen if other corps will replicate these tactics.
The success of Vivaldi can be attributed to proper planning, resource allocation, innovation, and the integration of advanced technology like drones and ground robots. Grant emphasizes the importance of spreading these lessons throughout the Ukrainian military to maximize their impact.
