North Carolina State football rumors: Philip Rivers smoke turning into fire

North Carolina State suffered a loss to Stanford on Saturday, leading to the decision to search for a new head coach. This marks the first occasion since 2012, following Tom O'Brien's dismissal, that the university is actively seeking a new leader. Among the names frequently mentioned in these discussions is former NC State quarterback Philip Rivers.

According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, reports of Rivers potentially joining the school are no longer mere conjecture. An industry source informed The Athletic that this scenario has evolved beyond mere rumors. Philip Rivers, who played as NC State's starting quarterback from 2000 to 2003, amassed an impressive record, throwing for 13,484 yards and 95 touchdowns, while earning the ACC Player of the Year title once.

Following his collegiate career, Rivers has served as the head coach of St. Michael Catholic since 2021, boasting a remarkable 50-19 record at the helm. His son, Gunner Rivers, is the current quarterback for St. Michael Catholic and has committed to playing for NC State. In 2021, Rivers interviewed for the vacant head coaching position at the Buffalo Bills, which ultimately went to Joe Brady.

NFL observers were reportedly impressed by Rivers' vision. However, there are comparisons to Trent Dilfer's transition from high school coach to FBS head coach at UAB, which did not yield favorable results, as the team went 9-21 under Dilfer before his dismissal in 2025. Unlike Dilfer, Rivers possesses superior athletic abilities.

Nevertheless, the question remains as to whether he will translate his success on the field to effective coaching.
