Mardi worker dies after bee attack in Terengganu
Police say the man was stung by a swarm of bees while collecting honey at the agency’s farm in Ayer Putih.
A 40-year-old man employed at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) farm in Ayer Putih, Terengganu, died after being attacked by a swarm of bees while collecting honey, according to the Kemaman police chief. The incident occurred at 9:50 am on Tuesday, when Hafizul Mat, a general worker, approached the beehive located on a 3-meter tall dry tree with a colleague.
Despite his colleague’s warning to avoid collecting honey from the tree due to the presence of bees, Hafizul insisted on proceeding.
Hafizul asked his colleague to wait 50 meters away from the beehive before climbing the tree. However, the bees swiftly attacked him. Hafizul then climbed down and jumped into a pool of water nearby to escape further stings, but he later complained of pain in his arms and legs due to the bee stings. He collapsed with convulsions and was taken to Kemaman Hospital for emergency treatment. The hospital confirmed the victim died from his injuries at 6:42 pm.
