Karwa Chauth 2026 Date: Check Moonrise Time in India and When Is Karva Chauth?

Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, is an important Hindu festival celebrated in North India to honor the bond between husbands and wives. The festival takes place on the fourth day of the new moon phase (Krishna Paksha) during the Kartik month, which follows Navratri. It is named after the traditional earthen pot, karwa, used to perform a water ritual called Argha to the moon.

During the day, married women observe a strict fast, abstaining from food and even water from sunrise until the moon rises in the night sky. This waterless vow is made to seek divine blessings for their husband's health, prosperity, and long life. The fast is broken only after the moon is sighted and an offering is made to it.

According to Drik Panchang, Karwa Chauth 2026 will fall on Friday, October 29, 2026. The Puja Muhurta, the auspicious time for the ceremony, will be from 05:39 PM to 06:57 PM. The fasting period begins early at 06:31 AM and ends at 08:18 PM. The moonrise on Krishna Dashami, marking the end of the fast, is expected at 08:18 PM. While Karwa Chauth is more popular in North Indian states, it is also observed in some parts of Maharashtra, where the Vakratunda form of Lord Ganesha is worshipped on the same day.
