Biofuel Bunker Snapshot: Lower feedstock costs limit Rotterdam B30-VLSFO price gain

Europe Rotterdam’s B30-VLSFO (POMEME) price has gained $11/mt in the past week, while the Dutch port’s conventional VLSFO price has jumped $30/mt over the same period. Rotterdam's B30-VLSFO (POMEME) price rose $11/mt last week while the city's traditional VLSFO surged $30/mt in the same time span. This reduced Rotterdam's B30-VLSFO cost advantage over conventional VLSFO by $19/mt, to $155/mt. Dutch distributors can trade ZRE A tickets for low-carbon fuel sales, which can be exchanged with other suppliers, helping to lower Rotterdam's biofuel prices versus those at other ports.

Belgium lacks such a system. Prima Markets' ARA UCOME and POMEME barge prices, indicators of feedstock sourcing costs, both dropped $73/mt over the past week, to $1,682/mt and $1,752/mt, respectively. This left UCOME $70/mt cheaper than POMEME. Slower bio-bunker demand may have contributed to the narrowing price gap. Dutch distributors shipped 154,000 mt of bio-bunker fuel in Q3, a 38% decline from Q2, according to Port of Rotterdam data.

Bio-VLSFO shipments fell 50% to 63,000 mt, while bio-MGO sales decreased just 4% to 41,000 mt. The port authority doesn't report B100 separately, but assumes it's part of bio-MGO. B100 samples at Rotterdam's port more than doubled in the first eight months, and increasing B100 demand might explain why bio-MGO sales stayed steady.

In neighboring Antwerp, B100 (UCOME) was priced at $1,974/mt, down $10/mt from the week before. Biofuel sales at Antwerp-Bruges fell to 13,000 mt in Q3, the port's lowest quarterly biofuel volume since last year's fourth quarter. Biofuels accounted for less than 1% of Antwerp-Bruges' total bunker sales of 2.16 million mt in Q3. B30-VLSFO (UCOME) in Gibraltar is $252/mt above the port's conventional VLSFO price.

Singapore's B30-VLSFO (UCOME) price fell $22/mt last week to $1,128/mt, while the port's conventional VLSFO price increased $35/mt over the same period, narrowing Singapore's B30-VLSFO price edge over conventional VLSFO by $57/mt to $184/mt. Prima Markets' China UCOME cargo price held steady at $1,220/mt, unchanged from the previous week. B100 was priced at $1,493/mt in Singapore today.
