Twitter Gold: Pitino On Scheyer
Jon Scheyer is held to a higher standard, but that’s part of being at Duke.
Washington, DC - March 27, 2026 - Head coach Jon Scheyer of the Duke Blue Devils received praise from Rick Pitino after their Sweet Sixteen round game of the 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC. Despite recent criticism for not winning a national championship yet, Pitino emphasized that it's not unusual for a coach to face criticism early in their career.
He compared Scheyer's performance to that of successful coaches like Mike Krzyzewski, Dean Smith, John Wooden, and Tommy Lloyd, all of whom achieved significant milestones in their fifth season. Pitino acknowledged that over a long coaching career, good things and bad things will happen, but ultimately, the cream rises to the top.
The article concludes with a positive sentiment towards Scheyer's achievements, stating that the author and the St. John's Red Storm fans are thrilled with what he has accomplished.
