The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) is advocating for the collaboration of specialized pharmacists to bolster pharmacy practice in Nigeria. Speaking ahead of the society's 99th Annual National Conference from November 1st to 7th, 2026, at the International Conference Centre in Awka, Anambra State, PSN President Pharm. Ayuba Ibrahim Tanko emphasized the need for advanced practice, clinical collaboration, residency training, education, and research contributions.
He highlighted that such professional expertise would lead to improved patient care services, competency development, structured training, and effective cooperation with other healthcare professionals. Tanko recognized the foundation for these initiatives, including the designation of Consultant Pharmacists, the PSN-West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN) collaboration, and the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists-Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) International Pharmacy Practice Residency Programme.
These programs offer opportunities for pharmacists to contribute to multidisciplinary nutrition care, specialized pharmaceutical services, and postgraduate training. Tanko stressed the importance of a standardized framework for Consultant Pharmacists, defining their role, competencies, responsibilities, professional development expectations, and accountability.
Additionally, he highlighted the benefits of the PSN-WASPEN collaboration, such as strengthening multidisciplinary nutrition care, identifying appropriate roles for pharmacists in clinical nutrition, and supporting safe use of medicines in enteral or parenteral nutrition. The PSN also mentioned the collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry for sterile compounding and specialized pharmaceutical services, particularly parenteral nutrition preparation.
The International Pharmacy Practice Residency Programme at DELSUTH offers training in aseptic technique, sterile compounding, and clean room practice, as well as quality systems development and technical education. Tanko advised that any new service be evaluated based on local needs, regulatory requirements, staffing, infrastructure, and sustainable financing.
