Obuasi SHTS scandal: Prioritise victims’ welfare, not just investigations – Felicity Nelson
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Felicity Nelson, has called for the psychological, emotional and physical well-being of alleged victims to be prioritised as investigations continue into sexual abuse allegations involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
Felicity Nelson, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, has admitted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made an error in their initial statement regarding sexual abuse allegations against the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School. Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile, Ms Nelson expressed her disagreement with the party's original response and criticized it immediately after it was released.
She emphasized that the party should have prioritized the welfare of the children involved over political considerations and that they had an obligation to show compassion and support for children, especially in cases of serious allegations of sexual abuse. "The idea that these are allegations, but as a party, we must always ensure that when we are talking about children, we must ensure that we care and support children," she stated.
Ms Nelson also questioned the message the party's initial statement sent to children and parents across the country. Despite her criticism, she welcomed the party's subsequent decision to revise its position, calling it a positive step. The controversy surrounding the allegations, brought to light by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, has the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, denying any wrongdoing.
The allegations are currently under investigation, and the school's headmaster has maintained his innocence.
