MP Food Safety Alert Ahead Of Diwali As 1,894 Food Samples Remain Pending For Six Months, Special Teams Deployed In Bhopal

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) in the state is bracing for a Diwali food safety drive due to a backlog of 1,894 samples awaiting testing. However, 1,081 samples have already been disposed of. Fines of up to Rs 3.15 crore have been levied, but only Rs 1.23 crore has been recovered. The samples were collected over a three-month period from April, primarily during festivals like Rakshabandhan.

Three specialized teams have been set up in Bhopal, led by food officials, to monitor the prevention of adulterated mawa and other sweets during the upcoming festival. The division-level flying squads have also been activated. The primary focus of the drive is on milk products, sweets, namkin, and oil. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) district president, Dharmendra Sharma, expressed concern over the FDA's limited infrastructure for testing, noting that two-thirds of the samples remain pending for the past six months.

The drive aims to provide results within 15 days to benefit traders and customers. Narmadapuram district has the highest number of pending cases with 344, followed by Ujjain with 285. The top 10 districts with the highest number of pending cases are Narmadapuram, Ujjain, Bhind, Morena, Jabalpur, Dhar, Bhopal, Dewas, Ashok Nagar, and Shajapur.
