Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) is installing 388 'anti-suicide' ceiling fans in its boys' and girls' hostels to improve student safety. The fans are equipped with a spring mechanism that detaches when subjected to excessive force, cutting off the power supply simultaneously. VNSGU Vice-Chancellor Kishor Chavda stated that the fans comply with guidelines from the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Supreme Court, the Government of India, and the Government of Gujarat.
He demonstrated the mechanism himself, emphasizing its ability to prevent fatal incidents by not supporting excessive weight. Over 800 students reside in the university's hostels, and the fans are part of the institution's commitment to safety in student accommodation.
