Barcelona, Inter Miami hail Messi’s historic Asturias award

Barcelona and Inter Miami have praised Lionel Messi following his receipt of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. The Argentine football star earned the recognition at a ceremony in Oviedo, Spain, on Friday, October 23. This marked the first time a footballer was honored individually with this prestigious award. Barcelona's official announcement on X highlighted the player's exceptional talent, commitment to sport, and charitable work, acknowledging that his career has left an indelible mark on the club's history.

The Spanish club emphasized that Messi's successful career, deeply intertwined with FC Barcelona, forms part of the club's legacy and that his involvement will always be a source of pride. Inter Miami also expressed their congratulations to their captain, complimenting his exceptional talent and acknowledging the values he brings to their team. The award jury acknowledged Messi's outstanding career, sporting achievements, humility, and efforts to promote access to education and healthcare for children.

Lionel Messi spent over two decades at Barcelona, becoming one of the club's most decorated players before leaving in 2021. Before that, he played for Paris Saint-Germain before joining Inter Miami in 2023. This latest honor joins Messi's extensive list of individual and team achievements, including eight Ballon d'Or awards and the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina.
