Autumn rain is coming. Help Eco Amigos stop Sabinillas rubbish reaching the sea

As autumn approaches, rain is expected to arrive, bringing potential harm to the environment if litter finds its way into the Mediterranean Sea. Eco Amigos, a local organization, is calling on volunteers to join their clean-up effort before the rains hit. The team will focus on areas where heavy rainfall is likely to cause man-made rubbish and debris to flow directly into the sea.

The clean-up session is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, from 10am to 11:30am, starting outside Chirringuito El Paseo. Volunteers will cover the stretch of coastline from the Manilva River to the sea, including Playa de San Luis de Sabinillas. The location was chosen because riverbeds and drainage channels carry any dropped items inland towards the shoreline once the rain arrives, making it crucial to clear these areas first.

Organizers will provide volunteers with bin bags, protective gloves, litter-picking sticks, and hand sanitiser, making it easy for anyone to participate. The event is open to all ages, including children, providing a great opportunity to teach youngsters about the importance of keeping beaches clean. Dogs are not allowed at the event. Since the beginning of 2024, volunteers have already removed 1,344 large bags of rubbish from natural spaces on the western Costa del Sol, ensuring proper disposal of all collected materials.

For more information or to sign up, volunteers can message the organizers through the Eco Amigos Facebook group or visit ecoamigos.net. The event is a perfect way to spend Halloween, turning trick or treating into a satisfying and meaningful experience. Join Eco Amigos in their mission to keep Sabinillas Beach pristine before the autumn rains arrive.
