A 16-year-old student, Prem Pravin Sawant, tragically drowned in a well while swimming with friends near Manikpur Church Road in Vasai West on Saturday afternoon. Prem, a Class 10 student at G.J. Vartak Vidyalaya, had completed his exams the previous morning and visited the well with five to six friends for swimming. It is believed that Prem misjudged the water depth and drowned.
Local residents and former corporator Nelson Lobo noted that children often swim in the area despite warnings. Safety nets were previously installed but later removed by the municipal authorities. The Thane District has recently recorded over 2.35 lakh new vehicle registrations in less than ten months, leading to concerns about traffic congestion and infrastructure.
Residents are demanding immediate action from the civic administration to secure the well and prevent similar accidents in the future.
