IZUMIOTSU, Osaka -- On October 5, the Izumiotsu Municipal Government of Osaka Prefecture inaugurated a groundbreaking video time capsule service designed to capture important life moments. This initiative, named "Kanata-Sousou" (Sending thoughts into the future), enables residents to record personal video messages on smartphones or other devices, addressing recipients and scheduling delivery up to 20 years ahead.
The service, operated in partnership with pharmaceutical wholesaler Taiyo Yakuhin Yutaka Hanbai, was unveiled during a ceremony marking the 50th wedding anniversary of six couples who recorded messages for their loved ones. Participants expressed their optimism, with Yoichi Hashimoto noting the convenience of technology and the emotional strength it provides, while his wife Kimiko found joy in imagining their future reactions.
Another couple, Junichi Tanaka and Kazuko Tanaka, highlighted the service's promise and its embodiment of family happiness. The concept originated from local IT firm Yuitsumuni, inspired by general manager Yoshinori Kawanishi's desire to replicate the personal touch of his late mother's annual birthday letters. Kawanishi sought to offer a modern solution that allows individuals to convey sentiments too complex for verbal communication.
The city's mayor, Kenichi Minamide, emphasized the project's potential to strengthen interpersonal bonds, while Taiyo Yakuhin Yutaka Hanbai president Hideki Yamada expressed hope for smiles and joy among users. The service, currently free for Izumiotsu residents, includes a signing ceremony for future events like newlywed registrations and birth registrations.
