Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called on the people of Ikenne in Ogun State to envision transforming their town into a leading hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technology across Africa in the next 50 years. Speaking at the 50th Ereke Day Anniversary, Community Awards and Investiture of 2026 Ambassadors event, Osinbajo emphasized that the forthcoming decade and half-century will be defined by AI advancements.
He challenged the community to dream big, highlighting that significant transformations often begin with seemingly audacious ideas that many initially doubt. Osinbajo drew parallels to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who defied colonial authorities' doubts about free education, and highlighted ValueJet, an airline owned by an Ikenne native, which now offers flights from Ikenne to Abuja, demonstrating the town's potential for growth.
The former Vice President pointed out that Ikenne currently boasts one of the highest concentrations of small and medium enterprises per square kilometre, and with a clear roadmap, it could achieve even greater heights. Osinbajo proposed the creation of an Ikenne 2036 Plan, a comprehensive 10-year development blueprint outlining priorities, costs, and measurable yearly targets.
This plan should position Ikenne as a center for AI-enabled education and the development of AI tools, complementing the existing educational curriculum. He cited Taiwan, a small island near China, which now produces a significant portion of the world's microchips, to illustrate that size is not a barrier but that vision and determination are crucial.
Osinbajo recommended implementing a robust STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program, starting AI literacy at primary school, introducing robotics, AI-powered learning tools, and establishing well-equipped laboratories. He also emphasized the importance of retraining teachers to serve as facilitators of AI-assisted learning and robotics, partnering with Chinese schools known for their strong AI curricula, and establishing an AI and advanced systems campus to provide solutions in agriculture, healthcare, education, and finance.
Osinbajo urged the town not to settle for modest goals but to aim higher than others have dared. Otunba Olufemi Allen, President of the Ikenne Development Association, described the event as historic, noting that Osinbajo's presence added significant value. Allen affirmed the IDA's commitment to promoting unity and preserving Ikenne's cultural heritage for future generations, aligning with the ideals of its founding fathers.
