Migrant workers queue at Woodlands Recreation Centre for BCRS refunds, earn S$150 to S$160 per month

Singaporean migrant workers have been utilizing the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) return machines at the Woodlands Recreation Centre, according to a report by Shin Min Daily News. The machines, located outside a supermarket, have become popular recycling spots for these individuals.

Upon inspecting the site on October 19, Shin Min noticed the machine was out of service. However, within 30 minutes, 15 migrant workers arrived with large bags of bottles and cans, only to leave disappointed when they discovered the machine could not be used.

One 32-year-old employee at a nearby mobile phone shop revealed that many migrant workers living in nearby dormitories often line up weekly to recycle items. She mentioned that while she personally avoids using the machines due to the large crowds, some migrant workers reportedly earn between S$150 to S$160 per day from the refunds.

The machines are cleaned and maintained about three or four times a week by supermarket staff. Should any unusual odour be detected, staff are sent to clean the machines. Employees are also observed wiping the machine surfaces and cleaning the floor when it becomes full.

A 39-year-old migrant worker who works in Woodlands explained that he returns empty bottles and cans collected from his dormitory to the machine when he shops for groceries after work. He visits the machine about twice a week, carrying around 200 cans each time, which allows him to earn approximately S$160 a month from refunds.

However, the popularity of the machines has led to long queues and occasional disputes among waiting customers, with business owners observing arguments among individuals waiting in line.
