FIFA approves normalisation committee for Nigeria

FIFA has taken steps to stabilize Nigerian football by approving the creation of a normalisation committee to oversee the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) until fresh leadership is chosen. The federation has been grappling with uncertainty over its administration and electoral procedures following a leadership crisis that saw its President Ibrahim Gusau and other executives resign on August 27, 2026.

The crisis was triggered by the country's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons' non-qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, leading to widespread criticism of Nigerian football's administration. In a statement, the NFF announced that FIFA's Council Bureau had given the green light for the committee's formation, with its members to be jointly appointed by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström addressed the committee in a letter to NFF President Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, detailing its mandate and the deadline for completing its tasks. The committee is set to remain in office until it has fulfilled its duties, but its term must conclude no later than May 31, 2027. The intervention is aimed at providing temporary leadership, addressing assigned tasks, and preparing for upcoming NFF elections scheduled for September 27.

Members of the interim body are barred from running for FIFA positions to ensure a clear separation between the committee's temporary responsibilities and the contest for elected positions. Until the committee members are appointed, the NFF secretariat will continue managing routine administrative duties and the day-to-day operations of Nigerian football.
