Aluminum Corporation of China, or Chinalco, has set up a corporate treasury centre in Hong Kong to oversee the state-owned company's offshore funds, according to Invest Hong Kong's announcement on Friday. The newly formed Chinalco Treasury Management Co Ltd will handle the group's offshore funds, oversee offshore financing, manage exchange rate and interest rate risks, and provide integrated financial services.

Alpha Lau, Director-General of Investment Promotion, stated that the establishment of the treasury centre exemplifies Hong Kong's position as the ideal starting point for mainland firms venturing globally and as a key hub for corporate treasury centres. As the world's leading offshore Renminbi hub, Hong Kong offers enterprises cross-border Renminbi settlement, multi-currency fund management, and risk hedging capabilities, according to Lau.

She expressed hope that Chinalco would leverage the treasury centre to further develop commodity trading functions in Hong Kong by integrating the city's pricing, clearing, financing, and warehousing networks with Chinalco's industrial strengths, thereby creating synergy.

Wang Xin, Chinalco's Chief Financial Officer, highlighted Hong Kong's fourth-largest foreign exchange market, its well-established channels for Renminbi financing and trade settlement, and its unique advantage of connecting to the mainland. These factors, according to Xin, will enable the group to manage its global funds more efficiently and effectively.

In the future, Chinalco Treasury aims to construct a fully functional offshore fund management platform for the company, with all funds pooled together, all settlements centralized, and all risks controlled. Chinalco, founded in 2001, is a major state-owned enterprise directly administered by the central government, with a diverse industrial chain spanning over 20 non-ferrous metals.

The company has consistently ranked among the Fortune Global 500 since 2008 and operates in more than 20 countries and regions.
