Billy Corgan Explains Why Olivia Rodrigo Is Your Favorite Rock Star’s Favorite Pop Star: ‘She’s Not Afraid’
"She's figured out that the way to break free is to be free," The Smashing Pumpkins frontman said.
Billy Corgan, frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins, discusses his admiration for Olivia Rodrigo, the young pop star who has been compared to classic rock icons such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow, Robert Smith, Jack White, Mick Jagger, Alanis Morissette, Stevie Nicks, and more. Corgan, who joined Rodrigo on stage for a duet of "33" during Lollapalooza, praises her intelligence and fearlessness in creating music.
He believes that Rodrigo is not afraid to make imperfect songs, have slightly off-key vocals, and take risks with her sound. Corgan finds this authenticity refreshing, as it allows younger artists to break free from the constraints of previous generations who may not have been around when rock stars received poor reviews for albums that are now considered classics.
Other rock stars, including Sheryl Crow, Robert Smith, Jack White, Mick Jagger, Alanis Morissette, Stevie Nicks, and more, have also expressed their support for Rodrigo.
