Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas was charged Thursday in connection with an alleged criminal enterprise involving the acquisition and distribution of marijuana and money laundering, according to PBS NewsHour. Federal authorities allege Lucas used her political power to protect the operation. Lucas, who has been in elected office for decades, surrendered following the indictment and was expected to make an initial federal court appearance on Thursday afternoon.

Following an FBI search of her office and a cannabis shop in May, Lucas characterized the investigation as an attempt to intimidate her.
