Trump criticizes LeBron James as 'disgrace' over national anthem

US President Donald Trump lambasted NBA star LeBron James on Thursday for what he deemed disrespectful conduct during the playing of the national anthem at an NBA game. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that James disrespected the nation while watching the anthem, adding that James should apologize to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives for the American flag and the values the country represents.

The video Trump shared depicted James stretching and practicing his basketball skills during the anthem, rather than standing in respect. Trump expressed his hope for James' retirement, stating that the player had been detrimental to the NBA. A spokesperson for the Philadelphia 76ers had not yet provided a response to requests for comment.

Trump's criticism of athletes during the national anthem has been a recurring theme, with the former president targeting other athletes, including NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during the anthem to protest racial injustice. Trump had previously canceled a White House visit for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in 2018 due to the team's disagreement with his stance on players standing during the anthem.

James has been a prominent advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement since 2020 and has supported progressive causes while becoming the NBA's leading scorer.
