Tom Skerritt, ‘Picket Fences’ and ‘Alien’ Star, Dies at 93

New York (AP) — Tom Skerritt, the Emmy-winning actor known for his solid, wry authority in roles such as a flight instructor in "Top Gun," a tough-but-fair sheriff on TV's "Picket Fences," and the doomed captain of "Alien," has died. He was 93. Skerritt died Wednesday of natural causes, according to a family statement. While his acting career was well-known, the family emphasized his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into their lives.

Skerritt was twice nominated for an Emmy for his role in "Picket Fences," winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993. Other notable roles included his portrayal of Shirley MacLaine's husband in "Turning Point," Sally Field's husband in "Steel Magnolias," and a scheming opportunist in "Contact." Skerritt once described himself as a character actor locked in a leading man's body, appreciating the balance between television and film.

Born and raised in a middle-class Detroit family, Skerritt spent four years in the Air Force, attended Wayne State University, and later studied filmmaking at UCLA. His acting career began with a supporting role in the 1962 Korean War film "War Hunt," which also featured Robert Redford. Redford later cast Skerritt as the stern Rev.

John Maclean in "A River Runs Through It," praising his halting, thoughtful manner. Skerritt's career took off after "War Hunt" with roles in "M.A.S.H.," "Thieves Like Us," and "Harold and Maude."
