Proton is hosting a free map of Flock surveillance cameras and devices after legal threats against its creator. Search your ZIP code to explore.
A free map of Flock surveillance cameras has been hosted by Swiss privacy company Proton, making it easier for users to locate the devices that track license plates. Flock manufactures automated license plate readers utilized by various entities including police departments, businesses, and homeowners associations. The cameras capture information about passing vehicles, regardless of whether the drivers are suspects.
Flock's cameras log over 20 billion vehicle sightings monthly across 49 states. According to Flock, its cameras have recorded more than 20 billion vehicle sightings each month across 49 states. However, the records are often abused, with at least 50 officers facing accusations or charges for misusing the license plate readers. Proton's map allows users to enter their ZIP code or zoom around the country to view devices in their area.
Flock attempted to have the researcher behind the original project take down the map, but Proton refused, arguing that it was an attempt to suppress information rather than prevent consumer confusion.
