Sharjah tests AI-powered fire-detection system using thermal cameras and drones

Sharjah is currently evaluating an AI-powered fire detection system that utilizes thermal cameras and drones to confirm whether a fire has triggered an alarm before dispatching emergency services. Developed by Saned, a facility management company, in collaboration with the Sharjah Civil Defence Authority, the Aman system aims to minimize unnecessary call-outs and expedite responses to industrial fires.

The technology is being piloted in open areas and warehouses, with a view to expanding its usage post-trials. During a demonstration, teams ignited a container and a damaged vehicle, after which a drone flew overhead to verify the incident and transmit data to the control center. Hamed Al Zarouni, Saned's director, explained that the system is designed to report fires in commercial and industrial locations, targeting faster incident detection, quicker response times, and enhanced warehouse safety.

"Previously the system only reported incidents but now it can also verify whether there is a fire, using AI-powered technology, cameras and drones," he added. Thermal cameras are capable of identifying flames, smoke, and abrupt temperature increases, while drones can be deployed to unmonitored zones to investigate potential incidents and relay pertinent information.

The drone's battery endures for up to an hour, can traverse distances of up to 20 kilometers, and transmits data via 5G connectivity, enabling operators to evaluate incidents remotely. Since its inception in 2018, Aman has been operational, and Saned developed the technology, which is owned by the relevant authority. A presentation during the demonstration detailed the system's features and outcomes.

Approximately 13,700 buildings are linked to Aman and monitored continuously, with 500 fire incidents identified and reported to the authority following verification. Brig Khalid Al Sharji of the Sharjah Civil Defence Authority emphasized that the latest tests aim to harness advanced technology to enhance responses to fire reports, particularly in industrial zones.

"Occasionally, the alarm is unclear, and we dispatch firefighters with fire engines, yet there is no fire. This wastes time and effort," he stated. By capturing images and transmitting them to the command center via drones, officials can verify reports before dispatching emergency teams, he further elaborated. The technology proves beneficial in warehouses and industrial sites housing vast quantities of stored goods, including flammable materials, thereby heightening the risk of fire.

Brig Al Sharji noted that Aman already offers monitoring and coverage in residential regions. The trials will aid in assessing the technology's efficacy in detecting and verifying fires in intricate industrial settings, where early identification can be crucial in limiting damage and safeguarding workers.
