Russia agrees to resume trilateral peace talks on Ukraine war

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed readiness to resume trilateral negotiations with Ukraine and the United States in an effort to end the war in Ukraine, signaling a possible diplomatic breakthrough. The announcement came following a lengthy meeting with Steve Witkoff, the special envoy for President Donald Trump, who had previously met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Oslo.

The initiative presents an opportunity for dialogue amid a particularly sensitive diplomatic climate, as disagreements between Kyiv and Washington continue to escalate over the strategy to conclude the conflict, the provision of defensive weaponry, and the concessions Ukraine should accept. Although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains supportive of resuming diplomatic contacts, he and his Russian counterpart hold differing views on the conditions for an agreement and the role the United States should play.

Russian Foreign Policy adviser Yuri Ushakov confirmed Putin's willingness to negotiate, stating that Moscow is prepared in principle to resume trilateral talks in mid-November, aimed at establishing a security framework for Russia and Ukraine once the conflict concludes. However, Moscow does not consider the current proposals from Ukraine and its European allies sufficient to address the crisis, emphasizing the need for additional concessions.

While a resumption of negotiations could facilitate progress toward a ceasefire and the establishment of security guarantees for both nations, the ultimate success will depend on the ability of all parties to overcome their differences and reach a mutually acceptable outcome.
