Residents praise Ibrahim Mahama over Damang Mine’s road projects, call for more jobs for women
Some residents of Damang have praised Ibrahim Mahama for what they describe as significant developments in the community since Damang Gold Mine Ltd took over operations, while calling for more employment opportunities for women and National Service personnel.
Frank Dankyi Agyei, the Manager of Mining at Damang Gold Mine Ltd, has firmly rejected the notion that the mine is solely dependent on existing stockpiles for its operations. In an interview with Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen host, Philip Osei Bonsu, Mr. Agyei emphasized that active mining is currently taking place at multiple pits. He described the company's deployment of heavy-duty mining equipment to the Amoanda and Juno pits, with further expansion plans for the Rex pits.
He clarified that the Amoanda Pit is undergoing a significant cutback, consolidating several previously separate mining areas into a single, larger pit. This project integrates the former Tometo East Pit, Amoanda Pit 4, and Amoanda Pits 2 and 3, which previously functioned as smaller, isolated sites. The expanded Amoanda Pit is forecasted to have a strike length of about 1.8 kilometres.
Mr. Agyei disclosed that the company utilizes two Liebherr 9400 excavators for active mining at Amoanda, complemented by a Hitachi EX2000 excavator and a Kattega excavator. He also noted that at least four excavators are actively at work at the pit, with an additional five deployed to support mining efforts at the Juno pits. The equipment at Juno comprises Liebherr 9350 excavators (88 and 89), an excavator 99, a Hitachi EX870 (105), excavator 114, and a Pulse excavator (83).
According to Mr. Agyei, the deployment of this equipment underscores the mine's continuous ore extraction rather than reliance on previously mined material. He also shed light on the significant investment in the mine's machinery, stating that a Liebherr 9400 excavator can fetch approximately €9 million on the market. He further revealed that the mine employs around 50 haul trucks, each priced around €4.5 million, underscoring the substantial financial commitment to maintaining operations.
The manager expressed that the company is actively working to revitalize the project and plans to extend active mining to the Rex pits.
